The consequences of apartheid are still felt in South Africa today. The potential for violence is great and the spread of HIV/Aids is alarming. Together with local partner organisations, we advocate for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), promote access to health and education services, and support income-generating initiatives set up by young people.
South Africa has one of the highest rape rates in the world. Almost half of young people under the age of 18 report talready having been the victim of sexual violence. Together with our partner organisation LifeLine, we offer affected girls and women medical, psychological and legal emergency help, carry out prevention work in communities and schools, and raise awareness among young men of topics such as gender-based violence (GBV) and toxic masculinity.
The lives of many teenagers in the suburbs of Pietermaritzburg are characterised by poverty, unemployment and violence. HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancies are widespread. Together with our partner organisation Dlalanathi, we support young people at risk by giving them access to healthcare and education services. In order to create a supportive environment for young people and achieve long-term improvements, we workclosely with families and institutions.
Many young people in South Africa live in poverty, with no prospect of employment or income. This situation also has a negative impact on their health. Together with our partner organisation Thandanani, we support young people with training and courses to enable them to set up micro-enterprises. Through these measures, we help to combat poverty and reduce the health risks resulting from a lack of economic prospects.
Even 30 years after the end of apartheid in South Africa, there is still a wide gap between rich and poor. Corruption, violence and high youth unemployment exacerbate social inequalities and remain great challenges for the country.
