Since 1975, around 174,000 Saharawi refugees have been living in camps near Tindouf in Algeria. They have fled from Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara and since then have been hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Although the United Nations announced a referendum on the self-determination of the Saharawi people in 1991, this has so far not taken place due to political differences.
For 50 years, the Saharawis have been living in refugee camps in the Algerian desert, where living conditions are harsh and the political situation is unsettled. Young people in particular lack prospects for the future. Together with our partner organisation UJSARIO, we work to strengthen the identity of the young Saharawis through leisure activities, open youth work and cultural projects, and to give them new hope.
The Saharawis live in five camps which are named after the cities of Western Sahara that were taken from them: El Aaiún, Smara, Auserd, Dakhla and Boujdour. These camps are entirely dependent on international aid.
