For two weeks, the future of the next generations will be negotiated at the climate conference. The People’s Summit, the summit of civil society from 7 – 10 November, is organizing numerous online events. This Saturday, 6 November, there will be a global off- and online day of action – including our long-standing partner organization Centro Sabiá from Brazil.
COP26, the climate summit in Glasgow, is in full swing. Since Sunday, government members from around 200 countries have been discussing what measures they want to take to curb global warming. Many young people in the projects we support are already confronted with the reality of climate change. For example, in Mozambique, where several cyclones destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of people two years ago. Or in the arid north-east of Brazil, where young people are building a livelihood under difficult conditions with organic farming instead of migrating to the big city like many others.
Many of these young people get involved in politics as much as they can alongside their backbreaking work in the fields. They want their voices to be heard and their concerns to be taken into account. And they are following the climate summit in Glasgow.
There, civil society organizations and activists have joined forces in the COP26 Coalition. They are keeping a close eye on government representatives and experts at the climate summit and pointing out their reality. They are organizing information events, creating networking opportunities and calling for a Global Day of Action for Climate Justice on 6 November.
On this day, actions take place in England, but also in other places around the world. The Swiss Climate Strike is organizing climate demonstrations in Zurich and Lausanne. At 8.30 pm, the “Digital Ralley” goes online again, with speakers including Ugandan climate protection activist Vanessa Nakate and Greta Thunberg.
We were particularly pleased that Centro Sabiá – one of our long-standing partner organizations – will be taking part in COP26. This will be part of an event on secure and equitable access to land and natural resources, which will take place in the pavilion of the International Fund for Agricultural Development IFAD. It can be followed live on YouTube this Saturday, November 6, from 12:30 p.m. Swiss time.
At the People’s Summit, the summit of civil society, from November 7-10, there will be numerous other online events that you can take part in from anywhere. For example, on Monday, November 8, there will be a discussion about the role of media professionals in protecting our planet.
Or the following day, on Tuesday, November 9, at an event at which activists from Peru, Brazil and Guyana will report. In the Amazon region, indigenous peoples are fighting to preserve their livelihoods and are resisting deforestation and powerful agribusiness.
