Europe is increasingly closing itself off to the flow of refugees. On their way, migrants are at the mercy of smugglers and traffickers. Terre des hommes is calling for the immediate opening of “humanitarian corridors” to protect them.
Walls and closed borders are supposed to “protect” Europe from refugees. The people who are actually in need of protection – families, children and young people fleeing war, persecution and unspeakable living conditions – fall by the wayside. On their journey, they are at the mercy of traffickers who are only out for their own profit. This is our failure. Terre des hommes schweiz condemns the closing of borders around and within Europe. We call for the immediate opening of “humanitarian corridors” that give refugees access to international protection and asylum until they reach their destination.
Take responsibility
All European governments must immediately develop a joint strategy to help refugees – regardless of their reasons for fleeing. It is finally time to take responsibility and develop a coordinated and sustainable solution for dealing with these people in a dignified manner. We owe it to them and to ourselves.
Traumatized children and young people
We must not deprive them of basic human rights such as protection, water, food, accommodation, medical care and legal support. This applies in particular to children and young people who are deeply traumatized while on the run. With our international Destination Unknown campaign, terre des hommes schweiz is helping to provide them with legal and psychosocial support.
