Terre des Hommes Education: education for sustainable development in Switzerland

The Terre des Hommes Education project raises awareness among pupils of social and political challenges through workshops at schools. The young people who take part develop global skills, critical thinking and a strong awareness of their own scope for action.

Background

In the Lehrplan21 curriculum, which is used throughout German-speaking Switzerland, there is a big focus on the topic of ‘Sustainable development and global citizenship education’. The Terre des Hommes Education project delivers a comprehensive programme of workshops that meets the requirements of the curriculum. The workshops, which take place in schools, are run by specially trained educators. They help the young people to develop an open, reflective attitude. Through the ‘Global Citizenship Education’approach, they are equipped with the necessary skills to play an active role in solving global challenges and to work towards a more peaceful, tolerant and inclusive world for all.

Project goals

The aim is for young people to develop skills to actively tackle global challenges and work towards a fair and sustainable world.

Project activities

  • Participant-oriented workshops. The participation-driven workshops last two to three lessons and are tailored to the relevant age group. The teacher chooses the topic that best relates to the teaching syllabus.

  • Skills to enact change. All workshops are based on the ‘Global Citizenship Education’ approach and teach the skills needed to actively promote sustainable development.

  • Development of ideas. In the basic module of the workshop, the pupils develop concrete actions or projects that can be implemented straight away.

  • Implementation in follow-up modules. There is the option of focusing on how the ideas developed will be implemented in practical terms as part of a follow-up module.
