Brazil-Europe: What comes after growth?

Invitation to “Round Table Brazil 2014 – Farewell to the growth imperative?”
At this year’s conference, speakers from Brazil and Germany will discuss questions about (post)growth in Brazil and Europe. What perspectives and ideas do young people in Brazil have?

Brazil shone for a long time with impressive economic growth and was said to be the “country of the future”. However, economic growth alone is no guarantee of a successful future. A rigid focus on national economic figures ignores many environmental problems and social factors. The “Round Table Brazil 2014” conference is dedicated to this discrepancy and the responses being formulated in Brazil and Europe.
Youth movements: Sustainability for social inclusion
A look at young people is an essential part of the debate on the future of the country. What prospects and scope for action does Brazil’s youth have and are they making use of them? Annette Mokler, Brazil Program Coordinator at terre des hommes schweiz, will moderate the discussion forum “Youth protagonism in Brazil – Active against political disenchantment” on this topic. She will also talk about her practical experiences with youth movements in the country. These youth movements see sustainability as the key to social inclusion.
Balance sheet, solution models and utopias?
The speakers from Brazil and Germany will provide an insight into current (post-) growth developments at the symposium. The three-day event will focus on questions such as: What expectations does the Brazilian population have of the newly elected President Dilma Rousseff after times of protest? What conclusions have voters drawn after twelve years of government by the Workers’ Party (PT)? And what solution models, utopias and concepts do parties and social movements currently have to offer?
