The latest report on violence in Brazil proves a gloomy fact: Afro-Brazilian youths have a significantly higher risk of dying in violent circumstances. While the number of murdered youths among the whites has decreased, their share among the blacks has continued to increase. Murder is the most common cause of death among young people in Brazil.
Unforgotten are the demonstrations that recently roused Brazil. Hundreds of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets. Price increases in public transport had triggered the protest. But the protesters were concerned about much more, as a commentary by our staff member and National Coordinator in Brazil, Alexandre Menezes, shows.
In summer 2011, two social workers from the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria visited Switzerland. They were able to take home some ideas from their exchange with social institutions and youth centres. One of these was the idea of a cocktail-mix competition, such as the one that has now taken place in the Smara refugee camp.

Lucy Elias, a staff member of our partner organisation Kivulini in Tanzania, was arrested by the police this week: The parents of a 17-year-old girl accuse her of helping her daughter to escape from the family. The girl had sought help from Lucy Elias because she is abused by her family.
The last few years have been eventful for terre des hommes switzerland and its partner organisations in Tanzania: 20 000 children and young people were reached by the partner organisations with their commitment in 2012 alone. After years of pioneering work, especially in the field of psychosocial support, terre des hommes schweiz receives good marks for its commitment in Tanzania.

Anyone who has the chance to get a job in one of the large mines in southern Africa has promising prospects for a good income and a better standard of living. This idea also tempts many young people to leave their homes and seek their fortune in the mine regions. But too often their hopes are not fulfilled. This is shown by a study on the migration of young people in the mining regions of Tanzania.
Just the wrong place at the wrong time: At the beginning of November, two young people from our partner organisation Unidad de Organizaciones Afrocaucanas were killed and another girl was injured. It is likely that they were caught in the crossfire of two warring gangs.
