A week of action by grassroots organisations is intended to highlight the high social costs of the 2016 Olympic Games.
Manguinhos is just one of many communities in Rio de Janeiro affected by evictions, police violence and human rights violations. And this in the name of major sporting events. One of the victims who is fighting against this is Ana Paula Gomes de Oliveira. In a short conversation, she reported on the suffering that she and her family have experienced.
With the Children Win campaign, Terre des Hommes has been demanding for years that major sporting events should not have a negative impact on the inhabitants of the host cities. About two weeks ago, the President of the Parliament, Eduardo Cunha, gave the green light: since then the impeachment proceedings against Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff have been underway. She is accused of violating tax laws and of presenting beautiful budget figures. Many observers consider the procedure to be a political manoeuvre by the opposition with the aim of deposing the president and her social policy. Civil society actors, such as our partner organisation Centro Sabiá, are lining up alongside the President.

Today the Citizens' Committee of Rio is publishing a report on the human rights situation in the run-up to the Olympic Games, which will be held in Rio next summer. The report, in which Terre des Hommes has collaborated, documents a series of serious human rights violations. "It is time for the International Olympic Committee to assume its responsibilities and act in accordance with the values set out in the Olympic Charter," said Ignacio Parker, Secretary General of the International Federation Terre des Hommes.
The legal concept of traditional peoples in Brazil has only been in existence since 2007, and the number of self-declared traditional peoples has increased dramatically since then. With this increase, unresolved questions become more urgent: When is a group considered a traditional people or community and who defines it? These questions will be the subject of this year's meeting "Round Table Brazil 2015" at the end of November.
Members of our partner organisation Centro Sabia from Brazil occupied the municipal administration of Campo Formoso until it committed itself to abide by national law in the future.
