Our partner organization Centro Aberto in Chimoio, Mozambique, is a small grassroots organization that can achieve great things. Thanks to their valuable work and a state-recognized qualification, up to 60 young people from the “25 de Junho” district, which is characterized by poverty and alcohol, have the chance to build their own lives.
Catherine Hollinger, Project Coordinator Moçambique
The Centro Aberto de Jesus runs a youth club in the suburban settlement of “25 de Junho” in Chimoio, Mozambique. This district is characterized by countless illegal distilleries: The surroundings are dreary and heavily marked by alcohol. It is easily accessible to everyone and is the only source of income for many. This settlement resembles a dead end. If the children and young people didn’t have the Centro Aberto de Jesus youth club, they would have nothing. Worse still, they would only have alcohol.
Perspective instead of problems with drugs
A total of 32 young people attend the club. Of these, 15 are actively involved in the associated carpentry workshop and carry out contract work. For example, doors and chairs are made for customers. The youth group is very mixed and all the children and young people come from a wide variety of backgrounds. However, the trainer at the youth club 25 de Junho tells us that all the young people here have one thing in common: They have no problems with the police or with drugs. The activities at the youth club have a hugely positive impact on their lives – they suddenly have a perspective.
Perspectives for 60 young people
And the perspectives they receive through the Centro Aberto de Jesus are truly remarkable. The Centro Aberto de Jesus is very well networked in Chimoio. In particular, the long-term cooperation with the national vocational training institute INEPF is considered an outstanding model for success: up to 60 young people a year can complete training at the institute at reduced rates.
Second chance for a successful future
In addition, a school-leaving certificate is not mandatory. This relaxation is a real opportunity for the future for young people who, as orphans, have to look after their younger siblings at an early age and whose school career is no longer a priority. Otherwise, only a few, often privileged young people have the opportunity to learn a trade or complete their studies. Our partner organization also focuses on long-term support and continues to accompany the young people after their training, for example in their new jobs.
Moçambique: Children and young people affected by HIV/AIDS
Moçambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. More than half of the population lives on less than one dollar a day. In addition, the population is severely affected by HIV/AIDS, and today around 500,000 children and young people are left to fend for themselves as orphans. Growing up without parents intensifies their already constant struggle against poverty and violence. Chimoio, the capital of the province of Manica, is particularly affected by poverty. Our partner organization Centro Aberto de Jesus offers children and young people a future with its handicraft courses in carpentry and tailoring.
