Organic farming in Brazil
Together for more vitamin J(uugend) and a greener world
Poverty and a lack of prospects are rife in rural areas of Brazil. Most families live from small-scale farming. However, this is threatened by the monocultures of agricultural companies and the widespread use of pesticides. A disaster for the local people and environment - and for the global climate.
With our project, we are working with young people to promote sustainable and organic farming. We train young smallholders in environmentally friendly, economically viable farming and strengthen their rights.

Strong stories. Strong youth.
"Since I joined the cooperative, I feel more alive. Together with other young smallholders, I am fighting for organic farming, because our soil is depleted. We use traditional seeds and natural farming methods, in harmony with nature. My example shows that: Even without using pesticides, I can earn money by selling seedlings and do something for the environment at the same time."
"I attended various courses on animal health, feeding and husbandry at the local cooperative. Thanks to the solidarity fund, I received a Morada Nova sheep. Since then, I have been breeding my own animals. I keep the females and sell the males. I can use the income to finance my studies. The animals and their welfare are close to my heart. My parents jokingly say that I'm nicer to the animals than I am to them."
"When I was younger, I dreamed of living in the city. Only later did I realize that life there can be very lonely. My husband and I are members of the cooperative in Esperança and produce organic cotton, corn and beans. We sell what we don't need to live on
at the market. The meetings with other small farmers are very important to me. Today I know that I can also make a difference here in the countryside."
