Livelihoods created for young farmers through sustainable agriculture

Despite being a small contributor to climate change, Mozambique is severely affected by its consequences, particularly cyclones, flooding and drought, which mainly affect smallholder farming families. With our local partner organisation NANA, we train young people and young mothers in sustainable agriculture in order to secure their livelihoods and contribute to climate protection.

Background

Mozambique suffers from severe inequality: over 20 million of its 32 million inhabitants live on the equivalent of less than 2 Swiss francs a day. While there has been economic growth as a result of gas and oil discoveries, only a small minority are benefitting from this. Three quarters of the population subsist on small-scale farming, which is severely affected by extreme natural events such as cyclones and droughts. Our project teaches young people and young mothers sustainable farming methods and vital knowledge about sexual rights and health.

Project goals

The aim is to contribute to poverty reduction and the development of sustainable agriculture in Mozambique.

Project activities

  • Training and expertise. We train young people and teenage mothers in climate-friendly and sustainable agriculture. As part of this process, they gain skills in entrepreneurship, savings groups and revolving credit groups, and bookkeeping.
  • Media literacy. We train young people to become media professionals who use social media to share information about topics such as sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • Awareness-raising. We organise awareness-raising events on subjects such as sexual health and gender-based violence (GBV).
  • Community initiatives. We help young people to develop and implement action plans for initiatives in their communities. Community members and relevant institutions are also involved to ensure the success of these plans, which may revolve around repair work or markets
