As a sponsor of a project or fund, you will receive regular updates on the work of the partner organisations by post. Today we show what a sponsorship report looks like by means of the story of 18-year-old Setemani from Mozambique.
Setemani is 18 years old and has been an orphan for about five years. His parents died within a few months. Setemani came to the Centro Aberto de Jesus in the neighbouring district of Nhamadjessa (Chimoio, Mozambique). The boy, then 13 years old, received support from our partner organisation and found a new home there, as he says himself.
Setemani completes his training
For three years he lived in the open centre, attended school and participated in the leisure activities of the centre. There he also had the opportunity to learn his first skills in handling wood. It soon became apparent that he had a great talent for carpentry. Thanks to an agreement between the Centro Aberto de Jesus and the national vocational training institute INEFP, Setemani was able to complete a three-month carpentry course in Chimoio last year. With the degree in his pocket, Setemani is trying to build his own life.
Work and school at the same time
He now lives alone in the house his parents left him. During the day he does small commissions for people from his neighbourhood. In the evening he attends school. Several times a week he visits the open centre to make school desks or, as he calls it, to give something back. At the same time, he meets with his friends from the youth group and exchanges ideas with them.
Comprehensive social commitment
The organization Centro Aberto de Jesus was founded in 1999 and since the beginning of the project the activists have been providing neighborhood help. They take care of AIDS patients and other chronically ill people. Volunteers take care of their household, fetch water and firewood and are involved in care. With the income from their own vegetable plantation, the organisation supports children, young people and sick people in the Nhamadjessa district.
Furniture finds a ready market
terre des hommes schweiz has been supporting the youth work of Centro Aberto de Jesus since 2008, and a lot has happened in the last year: the open centre has offered woodworking and tailoring courses. The target group is young people at secondary school level with or without a diploma. In the woodworking course the young people learn, for example, how to make bedsteads, door frames and window shutters. Or also chests of drawers, tables and chairs. These everyday objects are sold well in the neighbourhood and in the surrounding areas.
There will also be tailoring
In the tailoring course, the young people learn to sew by hand and with the machine and to make garments. The school uniforms sell well. In addition, the young people also learn to make changes to garments or to mend garments. In a society where the majority of people buy their clothes second-hand, this manual skill is in great demand. Besides learning how to use tools, the young people also learn how to deal with numbers and customers.
