COP26 in Glasgow: Fiery commitment to a cooler future

For two weeks, the climate conference will negotiate the future of the next generations. The People's Summit, the civil society summit from November 7-10, is hosting numerous online events. This Saturday November 6, there will be a global off and online day of action - including our long-time partner organization Centro Sabiá from Brazil.

COP26, the climate summit in Glasgow, is in full swing. Since Sunday, government members from around 200 countries have been discussing what measures they want to take to curb global warming. Many young people in the projects we support are already confronted with the reality of climate change. For example, in Mozambique, where several cyclones destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of people two years ago. Or in the arid north-east of Brazil, where young people are building a livelihood under difficult conditions with organic farming instead of migrating to the big city like many others.

Many of these young people get involved in politics as much as they can alongside their backbreaking work in the fields. They want their voices to be heard and their concerns to be taken into account. And they are following the climate summit in Glasgow.

There, civil society organizations and activists have joined forces in the COP26 Coalition. They are keeping a close eye on government representatives and experts at the climate summit and pointing out their reality. They are organizing information events, creating networking opportunities and calling for a Global Day of Action for Climate Justice on 6 November.

On this day, actions take place in England, but also in other places around the world. The Swiss Climate Strike organizes Climate demonstrations in Zurich and Lausanne. At 8.30 pm it goes online again, to the "Digital Ralley", at which Ugandan climate protection activist Vanessa Nakate and Greta Thunberg, among others, will speak.

We were particularly pleased that Centro Sabiá - one of our long-standing partner organizations - will take part in COP26. This as part of an event on secure and equitable access to land and natural resources, which will be held in the pavilion of the International Fund for Agricultural Development IFAD takes place. It can be followed this Saturday, November 6, from 12:30 Swiss time live on YouTube.

At the People's Summit, the summit of civil society, from November 7-10, there will be numerous other online events in which you can participate from anywhere. For example, on Monday, November 8, at the discussing the role of media professionals in protecting our planet.

Or one day later, on Tuesday, November 9 at an event at which activists from Peru, Brazil and Guyana report. In the Amazon region, indigenous peoples are fighting to preserve their livelihoods and are resisting deforestation and powerful agribusiness.
