The Brazilian documentary AMÉRICA ARMADA follows three activists who campaign against gun violence in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.
Raull Santiago was born and raised in the "Complexo do Alemao", a favela in Rio de Janeiro. As a member of the Papo Reto collective, he uses his cell phone to broadcast police actions and assaults in his community, the "Complexo do Alemão". Colombian Teresita Gaviria lost her son 18 years ago when he was murdered. Since then, she has been an activist in the group "Madres de La Candelaria", which brings together women who are in the same situation as Teresita. Despite death threats, the Mexican journalist Heriberto Paredes follows the struggle of the indigenous people, who have decided to take up arms in self-defense.
Following the film, directors Alice Lanari and Pedro Asbeg will discuss the background to gun violence and the responsibility of countries that export weapons to Latin America with human rights activist Eduardo Machado. Eduardo Machado works for the grassroots organization CIPÓ in the Brazilian metropolis of Salvador against police violence and accompanies youth groups in their resistance against racism.
The film AMÉRICA ARMADA (78 min) will be shown in the original Portuguese with English subtitles. The discussion will be held in Portuguese with simultaneous translation.
