One police operation per day for domestic violence in Basel

Domestic violence is a barely visible social problem. The current exhibition "Welcome Home" draws attention to this. It was opened on 25.11.2014 with a vernissage. The exhibition can be seen at the Haupt - Ort für Gestaltung in Basel until Friday 5 December 2014.

The exhibition "Welcome home" was opened with a vernissage on 25.11.2014 in Basel. After the official part of the event, the 70 or so visitors took the opportunity to take a closer look at the exhibition and exchange their impressions. One of the visitors commented: "A very impressive exhibition that gets close. Very close to life." The exhibition at the Haupt - Ort für Gestaltung, which runs until 5 December, is a joint project of seven organisations from Basel.
Domestic violence is very similar all over the world
The main part of the vernissage consisted of a panel discussion with experts from the participating organisations. The networked cooperation was an important experience. Andrea Zellhuber, who is responsible for violence prevention at terre des hommes schweiz, expressed this as follows. "The exchange with organisations working in Switzerland on the topic of domestic violence was an important enrichment for us. Basically, the challenges in prevention and awareness-raising work are very similar all over the world."
In Basel, the police deal with domestic violence on a daily basis
Miko Iso, co-head of the Domestic Violence Unit of the Justice and Security Department of Basel-Stadt, underlined the extent of domestic violence in her vote with figures: "In Basel, the police are called out once a day for domestic violence and every month around 20 children experience such a police operation at home. In Switzerland, a woman is killed on average every other week. Half of the attempted and completed homicides in Switzerland take place in the context of domestic violence".
Expert panel and music
In the expert panel Urs Rohrbach spoke about the importance of a special counselling service for men who want to change their behaviour. Rosmarie Hubschmid recently gave a brief insight into the work of the Basel Women's Shelter. The event was accompanied by the singer Theresia Bote, who composed songs especially for the exhibition.
Details of the exhibition:
When: until 05.12.2014, open from 10 to 17 o'clock
Where: Haupt - Place for Design, Holbeinstrasse 58 in Basel (in the backyard)
From 6 to 15 February, the exhibition will be shown again in Basel, as part of MUBA.
