Domestic violence is a barely visible social problem. The current exhibition “Welcome home” draws attention to this. It was opened with a vernissage on 25.11.2014. The exhibition can be seen until Friday, December 5, 2014 at the Haupt – Ort für Gestaltung in Basel.
The “Welcome home” exhibition was opened with a vernissage on 25.11.2014 in Basel. After the official part of the event, around 70 visitors took the opportunity to engage with the exhibition and share their impressions. One of the visitors commented: “A very impressive exhibition that touches you. Very true to life.” The exhibition, which runs until 5 December at the Haupt – Ort für Gestaltung, is a joint project by seven organizations from Basel.
Domestic violence is very similar all over the world
The main part of the vernissage consisted of a panel discussion with experts from the participating organizations. The networked collaboration was an important experience. Andrea Zellhuber, head of violence prevention at terre des hommes schweiz, put it this way. “The exchange with organizations that work on the topic of domestic violence in Switzerland was an important enrichment for us. Basically, the challenges in prevention and awareness-raising work are very similar all over the world.”
In Basel, the police deal with domestic violence on a daily basis
Miko Iso, Co-Head of the Domestic Violence Unit of the Basel-Stadt Department of Justice and Security, used figures in her speech to underline the extent of domestic violence: “In Basel, the police are called out once a day because of domestic violence and every month around 20 children experience such a police operation at home. On average, a woman is killed every other week in Switzerland. Half of attempted and completed homicides in Switzerland take place in the context of domestic violence.”
Expert panel and music
In the expert panel, Urs Rohrbach spoke about the importance of special counseling services for men who want to change their behavior. Finally, Rosmarie Hubschmid gave a brief insight into the work of the Basel women’s shelter. The event was accompanied by the singer Theresia Bote, who composed songs especially for the exhibition.
