Life prospects away from crime and violence

The district of Aguablanca in the vast metropolis of Cali, home to some two million inhabitants, is characterised by violence, drugs and armed conflict. For many young people, joining gangs of youths seems to be the only way out. Together with our local partner organisation Paz y Bien, we create safe spaces for young people and promote non-violent prospects for a better future through educational programmes.

Hear from the people on the ground

“When I was 13, I was full of hate and was on the verge of turning to crime. Then I discovered the power of forgiveness and found my inner peace. I am happy to still be alive.”

Background

Cali is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. One third of the city’s population lives in Aguablanca, one of the poorest districts. Violence, armed conflict and the notorious Cali Cartel dominated the city for decades. Until the middle of the 1990s, the cartel controlled large parts of Cali and claimed hundreds of lives every year. The persistent violence has left deep scars. Many young people adopt violent behavior, are tempted by the prospect of fast money and slip into crime – often with fatal consequences.

Project goals

The aim is to help to create a life free of violence for children, young people and their families in three neighbourhoods of the district of Aguablanca.

Project activities

  • Protection and support. We approach young peoplen in the street and tell them about the programme Francisco Esperanza, which offers young people protection and medical and psychological support across seven youth centres.
  • Assistance. We help these young people to find apprenticeships and re-enter the school system.
  • Restorative justice. We teach young people a method of restorative justice to enable them to gradually break out of the spiral of violence.
  • Personal development. We offer workshops on topics such as life dreams, non-violent communication and motivation, where young people can also improve their reading and writing skills.
  • Awareness-raising. To ensure that we actively engage the local community, we organise public events to promote understanding of the needs and challenges of young people.
