On June 14, 1991, women in Switzerland went on strike. Rather symbolic, but a historic event nonetheless! After 28 years, a new edition is necessary. Because the key demands from back then have still not been met: Equal pay, fair representation in management positions, protection from violence and discrimination. terre des hommes schweiz supports the demands of the women’s strike.
Violence against women is still an unacceptable reality in Switzerland. In our project countries, it is one of the main obstacles to development. All over the world, women and girls experience psychological and sexual violence in their closest relationships. Our youth projects clearly show that violence can be reduced if young women are strengthened in their self-confidence and protected by a supportive environment.
However, it is just as important to involve young men and motivate them to live a masculinity that is not defined by the use of violence. Inequality of opportunity still exists in international NGOs too. It is true that 70 percent of all employees are women. However, 70 percent of management positions are held by men. The fair share initiative, which we have joined with many other organizations, aims to change this. Together, we are committed to equalizing the proportion of women on management boards, boards of directors and boards of trustees with that in our teams by 2030.
The talents of young women should be promoted in our organizations in the same way as those of young men. There is still a lot to do, both nationally and internationally. Join us in the global fight for equality – on Women’s Strike Day on June 14 and beyond!
