Young migrants paint their picture of home

“Home is where I can live in peace with my family and friends.” This was one young person’s answer to the question of what home means to him. The unaccompanied minor asylum seekers at the Lilienberg Center dealt with these and similar questions in various workshops this week.

What is home? What does it mean for young people to live alone in a foreign country, far away from their families? From Monday to Thursday, over 40 unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (Mineurs non accompagnés, MNA) worked on answers and insights to these questions at the MNA Center Lilienberg. They were supported by Swiss young people from imagine, who were able to draw on their tried-and-tested imagine workshops.

Unaccompanied minors go public
The presentations on the young people’s home countries, which were prepared at the Lilienberg from August 12 to 15, will be presented in various communities in the region over the course of the fall. In addition, the public will have the opportunity to get to know the young people who live there and their living situation better at various events, including the open day of the Lilienberg MNA Center on October 19, 2013.

Launch of the new MNA project
The first workshop day marked the launch of the project by terre des hommes schweiz and the Lilienberg MNA Center, which aims to raise awareness of the living situation of MNAs. The project with the Lilienberg MNA Centre, which is managed by the Zurich Asylum Organization on behalf of the Canton of Zurich, offers the opportunity to promote understanding of the situation of MNAs among the Swiss population and to involve young people more in public life.

Awareness-raising work against discrimination and racism
Youth migration is a key topic in the work of terre des hommes schweiz. terre des hommes schweiz promotes an understanding of social justice in Switzerland by providing information on development cooperation issues and working with young people to raise awareness of discrimination and racism.
